Sedation Dentistry

Really cute girl with good teeth. When it comes to sedation, we, at Puget Sound Pediatric Dentistry, believe in giving a child the minimum sedation necessary while maintaining their comfort. This can be a very helpful tool in dentistry, sedation allows our young patients to get dental treatments performed with minimal to no anxiety.

What is Sedation

Using varying medicine, we are able to relieve pain, numb, and relax your child, helping them be more comfortable during dental treatment.

When is Sedation used?

Sedation is used for:
•  larger or more extensive procedures like fillings, root canals, crowns, extractions and periodontal treatments
•  patients who have dental phobias, low pain tolerance, physical handicaps, are not at an age to understand what we are doing, or who have a strong gag reflex
•  patients that find it difficult to sit still

Sedation is a recommended process by the American Dental Association as an effective way to help patients feel more comfortable during their dental visit. Please inform us of any and all medical concerns, medications, or treatments before using a sedative or anesthetic. Our dentists, Dr. Lugo, Dr. Kramar, and Dr. Farmer will talk to you about the process of sedation and pre- and post-sedation instructions.

We offer varying types of sedation, including nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, oral sedatives, general anesthetic, and IV sedation.

"Laughing Gas" (Nitrous Oxide)

Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps phobic or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are still conscious and can talk to their dentist during their

Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea and constipation. Your dentist will provide you with pre- and post-sedation instructions.

Oral Sedatives

An oral medication that is drunk by the patients, mixed with a juice. This sedation requires no needles, which is often preferred by our young patients. The reaction to this sedation varies, and we never know how a child will react. Some children fall asleep, some don't.

General Anesthetic

Often known for its needle, this is the most typical sedative we use. It numbs the area, the child feels little to no discomfort, and the effects wear off within 1-2 hours following the procedure.

IV Sedation

Done in a hospital setting, this sedation guarantees the child to sleep through the entire process. We are able to do all work needed and they experiece no discomfort.
